Defining Cooking

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

Cooking is usually associated with the application of heat in order to prepare food. Technically, cooking really refers to non-heated methods of food preparation as all.

A real definition of cooking would be that it is the preparation of food through some manner that changes its texture, flavor, digestibility, or any number of other factors. It is usually done in some planned and organized manner. This may be a very complex and ordered application of various procedures and the addition of various ingredients, or it may be as simple as throwing a hamburger on a grill over an open flame.

Review-pasta Magic Makes Tragic Pasta

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

The other day I picked up a kitchen gadget called the “Pasta Magic” and today I allowed it to approach the wonderfulness that is my spaghetti sauce. After judging the results of this supposed time-saving device, I have to give it a hearty thumbs-down. Actually, not only do I have to give it the thumbs-down, but I really want to.

Opening it up and looking at the contents, I found two containers, two strainer lids, two lock-down sealing lids, instructions, and a thermal sleeve that’s supposed to help you not burn your hand while pouring out the water you’ve just used to cook your pasta. I’ll go through each of the components, because I have something to say about each.

A Health Food For Snack Or Dessert – Four-berry Pudding

Monday, May 12th, 2008

My Doctor said “you have to change your diet or you are going to plug your arteries!”
He had been telling me that for years and I just dismissed it because I did not feel bad so what could be wrong with it. Well now that I am over 50 and gravitationally challenged I realize what he was trying to tell me. After my cholesterol and blood pressure began going higher and higher. I had many bad eating habits I had to break, such as, eating anything out of the vending machine at work when I had a break. Trans Fat, and sugar content never concerned me then. After reading several diet and health books the common theme to them seemed to be portion control to lose weight and a more natural diet to maintain health. Berries seemed to be good for you for both diet and health so after experimenting with several recipes I came up with one that naturally turns into a berry pudding that is great for snacks. I eat that now for my breaks along with some beef jerky and my cravings to eat and snack are satisfied by a much healthier treat.

Convenient Ways To Get Your Little Ones To Appreciate Broccoli

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Most kids are finicky when it comes to eating green vegetables. They have their favorites and then there are the ones that they won’t consume at any cost. If your little one won’t even try anything green, learn ideas to get them to eat it and enjoy the flavor. Today, we’ll be starting with broccoli.

The quickest way to convince your child to eat broccoli is to add it to a dish that they already like. If your child has never tried broccoli, this will make it easier still. The taste of the other foods will mask the taste of the broccoli. Broccoli doesn’t taste bad, but it does need some sprucing up to taste better.

Fondue - Types Of Fondue And Restaurants That Serve It

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Several years ago, I worked for a company that had a corporate office in Belgium, and some Belgian employees came and visited our local office on a business trip. As I was chatting with one of them, the subject of fondue came up. I offhandedly mentioned this favorite fondue restaurant of mine, and raved about the delicious chocolate fondue dessert.

Across his face came a look of incredulous horror. He had the same expression I must have had when I saw spam sushi in Hawaii for the first time. For him, the only proper fondue was cheese fondue, and a chocolate fondue was just a wrong, unnatural thing. Any notions of Americans being a savage, uncultured and decadent people must have been confirmed in his eyes.
